Cat Calls Postcard

I'm coming to the end of my graduate year and the end of production on Cat Calls. I'll miss these characters a bunch as they were so fun to work with. Hopefully they'll pop up again down the line.

Cat Calls

Here at last are my main characters for my second year film, entitled, "Cat Calls". The two human characters are pretty much defined. The only thing I have to settle on is the cat's colour scheme.

Thanks for taking a look, I'll have other concept art to post over the coming weeks :)

Posty-Post.

Here's some colour concepts I did for my student film proposal, which we had to hand in today. I had a lot of fun doing these, I'm slowly learning that colour is not my bitter enemy. It can actually be a pretty cool guy when it wants to be :)

As always, thanks for taking the time to pop by :)

More 'Demon Dilemma' Stuff.

Our film is really chugging away since I last made a post. Our designs have evolved a lot, for the better I think. So I figured I'd post some of the revised designs for the Girl that I've been working on. These read down from oldest to newest. :)

We decided to change her outfit from a skirt to trousers, mostly to cut down on animation time.

 Some colour practice malarky!

Fun with hats!

I've to still do a final character drawing with all of her correct colours and shapes, but I'll post it here when it's done :) If you're interested in seeing more concept art, jump over to Erin Overmann and Rachel Wilson. They have some amazing stuff!

As always, thanks for taking to time to pop over!

Life Drawing In Colour!

Mob Squad / Simpsons reference ;)

Anyhoo, for the past two weeks we've been having what is referred to as our experimental lessons in life drawing class. This touches upon two of my biggest fears in drawing: mixing of media and colour! I can't wrap my head around colour, just can't do it. But god help me I try.

We started off by warming up with a few 30 second gestures.

Following this we moved into mixed media. I found I got good results by doing my under drawings with a fine liner pen and then going in with oil and chalk pastels.

I like how all of these turned out, although I do regret not using a darker colour paper for the two bottom drawings. I hope to revisit this style later in the year.

As always, thanks for popping by :)

Something a little bit more fun!

This past week our class group was tasked with writing a pitch for a group film. We've been developing our concepts since September and finally had to submit it all for assessment. Out of about 16 or so ideas, three of four will be chosen to go into production and we'll each be assigned a film to work on for the rest of the year. It's an exciting time! :)

After handing in my pitch I thought I'd celebrate by posting some of my concept work up here. My story focuses on four little sprites in a forest.

These are my four main characters. Clockwise from the top left their names are Vanity, Mischief, Wrath and Gloom.

Each characters personality is summed up in their name. Keeps things nice and simple!

Mischief is the protagonist of the film, if you want to call her that. She causes a lot of trouble for the other characters.

Gloom, as the name would suggest, is down in the dumps quite a bit.

Vanity is completely self involved. She's only interested in what you have to say if it's a compliment!

Wrath is the one sprite you do not want to cross. She'll hold a grudge and never forget.

I had a lot of fun with the concept of developing Grotesque forms that the characters would change into at a point in the story. These forms are 10 times the sprites' normal size and are triggered by emotional trauma. As they move around they wreak havoc on their immediate environment.

I had a really good time trying to come up with different and unusual ways for the characters to move. My two favourites are Gloom and Wrath. Gloom drags the earth up with each step she takes making her movements very laboured and slow. Wrath moves on all fours and her limbs dive in and out of the earth, almost like worms.

I'll wrap this post up (cos it's super long) with some gesture studies I did of Mischief and Vanity. I'll hopefully revisit these characters in future posts.

As always, thanks for reading :)

Some recent life drawing.

Update 23/10/11:  I didn't want to clutter up things with a new post for just two drawings so I think I'll pop them in here :)

Here's another contour drawing done semi- blind.

Here's an example of some scribble drawing where you only highlight busy areas on the body. We did quite a few of these but I found this one works the best in terms of proportion and structure.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right, an update is long overdue so here's some of my better pieces from my last few life drawing classes.

These first two poses were done semi-blind using pencil, on 22/09/11

These two were completed just this morning in a free-style class, also in pencil, 13/10/11.

I'll be making more of a conscious effort to update this blog regularly from now on, so stay tuned!

Some Layout Things

Click the images to view fullsize.

This is admittedly my weakest area but it couldn't hurt to post a few things. This is work from year 2 so it's quite recent.

For the first assignment we were given a full production layout from a feature film, in this case All Dogs Go To Heaven, and told to draw it from a different camera angle. This particular layout is done in one-point perspective.

I like the chair :p

This second layout was a research project where we were told to go out into the world and find some good objects to reference and include them in a setting of our choice. Being the imaginative mind that I am, I chose a library, I know, I know :/

This layout is in two-point perspective.

Obivous photograph is obvious but I'm between scanners right now.

This third project was just a small part of a group collaboration. The theme was Carnival in New Orleans. The cat statue draws influence fro Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland...which I have not seen. Behold.

A Spot of Animashoon...

Full View Please.

My apologies for the questionable camera quality in most of these videos, time was not on my side. Hopefully I'll get the opportunity to shoot these again in the future.

The first is final submission for the FatSkip assignment for CCH2. Not much to describe, its a fat character jumping rope, what's not to like? The brief required that the character be on model, the jury's still out on just how well that went :/

Here we have my final submission for the FatJump assignment. Character is not on model but...its the movement that counts? Too good to watch just once so for your convenience I looped it thrice!

Next is the FailedLift. That is, a lift that has failed. You're welcome. The character is The Pink Panther and the object is a giant diamond. The assignment also includes a successful lift onto an elevated platform but I feel this particular animation works better overall.

Life Drawing Submission for Year 2

More of the same from my second year. Progression? What progression?
